Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has announced that starting January 15, 2024, the minimum top-up amount for Nol cards will triple from Dhs5 to Dhs20.
Additionally, commuters will now need a minimum balance of Dhs15 on their cards when using the metro, increased from the previous Dhs7.50.
Nol cards are pre-paid smart cards used for payment on Dubai’s public transportation system, including the metro, trams, buses, and water taxis.
Commuters can top up their cards at metro stations, through the RTA website/app, solar-powered machines, petrol stations, and retail stores.
While best known for public transit, Nol cards also have a growing number of other uses. Cards can be used for payment at many supermarkets, restaurants, parks, museums, and more across Dubai.
RTA has likely made this change to encourage users to load more stored value onto their cards. However, the higher minimums could impact commuters who make only occasional short trips.
