Dubai is set to add another feather to its cap with the world’s first floating mosque. The Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) announced this groundbreaking project during a press conference held at their headquarters on 21st September 2023.
The floating mosque, which is expected to open its doors by 2024, is currently under construction at the Dubai Water Canal. This unique structure will not only serve as a place of worship but also as a symbol of Dubai’s commitment to innovation and inclusivity.
The mosque will welcome individuals from all religious backgrounds, emphasizing the city’s spirit of tolerance and cultural diversity.
However, visitors will be requested to adhere to modest dress codes in line with Islamic traditions. Female visitors, in particular, will be required to cover their heads and shoulders upon entering the mosque.
In terms of design, the floating mosque will feature three floors. The prayer hall, located underwater, will accommodate between 50 to 75 worshippers at a time.
The two floors above water will host Islamic lectures, exhibits, and workshops, providing a platform for cultural exchange and learning.
In addition to the floating mosque, IACAD is also working on another pioneering project – the world’s first fully functional 3D-printed mosque.
Expected to open in the first half of 2025, the 3D mosque will span across 2,000 square meters and will be situated in Bur Dubai, accommodating up to 600 worshippers at any given time.
These innovative projects underscore Dubai’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of architectural design while preserving and promoting Islamic traditions and values.
As the world eagerly awaits the completion of these projects, it is clear that Dubai continues to redefine the skyline with its visionary approach to architecture.
